Since Hawke's dog showed up, he's taken up hunting as his primary occupation. He'll give as much of his catch to the innkeeper as she can use, since she's a better cook than he is and since he's still staying in the inn. Whatever she can't use he shares with the villagers, taking coin in trade if they've got it but accepting nothing if they don't. He's not a complete douchebag, after all. He only takes advantage of people who can afford it, aka most of the jerkwads living in Kirkwall. 8'D
