Frequently Asked Questions
ღ What kind of genre does BR fit under? Horror? Slice of life?
We aren't looking to box the game into a single genre or tone. Using the test drive meme as an example, it is possible to take a humorous route with looking for unicorn crap or rescuing a princess, but the unicorns can still be violent, and there are flesh eating rose bushes guarding the towers. Essentially, we're aiming for a middle ground here, and things that might seem to be solely for laughs at first glance might be more serious or even horrific as events unfold. The games and quests at BR might be for something silly and little, or could be more dangerous and awful.
ღ But what if I don't know anything about fairy tales?
Never fear! The mods are here to help you out, and in general, the events will be detailed and the accompanying story will be linked along with them.
ღ How does time work in the setting?
The game operates on a 1:1 ratio! So 1 day irl = 1 day in-game.
ღ How many characters can I reserve/apply for at any given time?
You can only put in reserves or applications for two characters at a time.
ღ Can I get an extension if my reserve expires?
Sure. If players ask, they will be granted an extra week to complete their applications.
ღ Are challenges allowed?
No. We do not allow reserve or app challenges in Beastly Roses.
ღ So what's the deal with newly released canons? Can I app from them straight away?
That depends. With most forms of media, we ask that you wait at least a month after the final release date before submitting an application. With regards to a television show, as long as it already has half a season out, that is fine.
ღ What about Activity Check?
Activity Checks will run once a month between the 1st and the 5th. Once the 5th hits, you will have two days to reclaim your characters if you forgot to post to AC initially. After the 7th of every month, characters who have failed AC will be removed from the game. If you fail AC and are removed from the game, you cannot reapp that character until the following month.
You will need one piece of activity for the month
All characters are exempt from AC during the month that they app into.
ღ What counts toward Activity Check?
-A mirror post
-A log post
-15 comments, split between a maximum of 3 threads
Posts that are used toward Activity must show that an effort was made to reply to any threads made in them.
Also, a thread or post used in a previous AC cannot be used twice.
ღ Wait! What happens if I don't make activity or forget to comment to it during the allotted time period?
Don't worry about that either! If you forget to comment to AC, a danger list will be posted. You will be allowed to link your activity then.
If you don't have sufficient activity, you are allowed a save. If you take a save for your characters, you will not be eligible for another one until six months has passed.
ღ Is my character given a communication device?
Yes, but don't expect any cell phones or computers being handed out to your characters.
ღ Okay, so what is it?
A magic mirror, of course! It's capable of video and audio posts, although there might be a few connection errors now and then. After all, magic is on the fritz in Loria.
Mirrors do not support text posts, but never fear! Characters will have mailboxes where they can receive actual letters, and there will be a village post where characters can leave notes as well.
ღ Does my character get their mirror straight away?
Sorry, no. Characters will not get their hands on a magic mirror until they make it to a village. For the characters who initially wake up in the game, that means they won't have theirs until the village is available. Any characters apped into Beastly Roses after that will have to wait until they make it to the village.
ღ What about language barriers?
No longer a problem, thanks to Mitch the Man Witch's magical efforts!
ღ And logs?
Logs are pretty standard. There is a handy, dandy HTML box for setting up logs on the sidebar of
ღ Is my character allowed to break the fourth wall?
We will allow this to happen, but all we ask is that you please ask the other player first.
ღ So it seems like we can get items and abilities back. How does this happen?
In Beastly Roses' game setting, regains can happen. In order to get abilities, characters will have to make deals with Fox, the one responsible for most of the chaos in the game. This is the only one way to gain a power. However, there will be prices to these abilities, so be warned. We will let players know when deals will be available. Other ways to gain abilities will be released over time.
As for items, participation in events will allow each character to request one item to gain back. However, there is a chance someone might not get back what they request, as it will be RNG'd with two other options of mod choice.
On a further note, not every event will offer the chance for item regains. This is to keep things interesting for players and us alike!
ღ Okay, but seriously. Why 'Beastly Roses'? There aren't beasts or roses in the premise.
Also it gives us an excuse to have characters getting chased by flesh eating rose bushes.
ღ What sort of characters can I play here at Beastly Roses?
Characters from any fictional medium (books, video games, anime/manga, comics, Disney, live action, etc.) are allowed! This includes fictional representations of historical figures/countries/etc. So, Abe Lincoln, Vampire Slayer? Go ahead!
Animal characters and other such non-humanoid characters are applicable. Due to the fact that there isn't any real technology in Loria, robots and AIs would not work.
Beastly Roses also accepts Original Characters.
ღ What about AUs?
As long as the AU is canon, that's fine! For example, if someone wanted to play a character from a canon with multiple routes/endings (such as Fate/stay night or the Persona series), you are free to pick and choose which endings to play from. However, AUs that are not canon (such as if you wanted to say that in Dragon Age II, both Hawke twins lived and made it to Kirkwall) will not be accepted.
ღ What about CRAUs from previous games?
Unfortunately, Beastly Roses does not accept CRAUs for overarching plot reasons.
ღ Does that mean we can apply for multiple versions of a character?
No. We will only allow there to be one version of a character in the game at any given time. So, if we have a female paragon Shepard from Mass Effect in game, we won't accept an application for a male renegade Shepard.
ღ Is there a character limit?
There sure is. As of this moment, the limit is 3 characters.
ღ Can I play more than one character from the same series?
Sure! As long as they are not closely related. Our limit is 2 from the same series.
ღ How do the characters arrive in this place?
All characters will arrive at the same time, courtesy of the curse. Everyone will wake up in a glass coffin after receiving a kiss, either from one of the dwarves that have taken up residence in the Glass Forest or another character who happens to stumble upon your coffin in the woods.
ღ What do you mean by "arrive at the same time"?
Each character that apps into the game has been here the entire time. The coffins are not magic portals. There is essentially no way in and out of Loria. They have just been asleep for the past 50 years or so.
ღ My character is dead in canon! What happens then?
Any injuries sustained post death would be healed prior to waking from the coffin but their clothing would still retain any reminders of their demise. For instance, if they were shot, there may be a hole from where the bullet traveled through their shirt, and there would most certainly be blood.
ღ What if my character is sick? Are they magically cured as well?
We'll leave that up to the player. If you would like the character to still be sick, that's acceptable, but if you would rather say that the magical sleep cured them, that's also fine. Our only rule concerning any viruses is that they are no longer contagious.
ღ Can I canon update once my character they are here?
Yes. They can purchase a magical drink from the local witch that will send them into a dream-like state, where they will have a dream of the future. Characters cannot leave the world, so the only thing that would change would be their knowledge.
Reminder: All canon updates must be mod approved. Here is the canon update post.
ღ Wait. If characters can't leave Loria, what happens if I drop?
Well, the character falls into a cursed sleep again and is taken back to their coffin by the dwarves.
ღ Can I play a dropped character?
Of course! They'll be awakened from their coma by a kiss, the same as any character waking for the first time.
ღ What happens if my character dies in-game?
They won't technically die. The reason for this is **spoiler**.
As with drops, they'll fall into a cursed sleep and end up back in their glass coffin. They will be "dead" for a minimum of three days.
In order for a character to wake up, they must be found and kissed again. Should a character die and not be kissed, Fox will go ahead and wake them back up - for a price.
Reminder: All character deaths must be mod approved before they occur. Here is the post where you can request a death.
ღ Are there any consequences to dying more than once?
Yes! For the first death, a character must simply journey through the forest to find the deceased.
For the second and third deaths, another character must fight a creature on your behalf.
For any subsequent deaths that follow, someone must make a deal on your behalf with Fox.
If nobody does any of these things for your character, you will be indebted to Fox for a short amount of time.
ღ So my character has some sort of magical or technological talent/ability?
Good question! I'm glad you asked that because here's the catch: Your character is now powerless.
Their powers were taken the moment they were pulled into Loria. Because magic is scarce, and they are from different worlds, their abilities have been cut off for the time being.
ღ But my character is dependent on magic or technology to survive! What happens to them?
Characters such as vampires/werewolves/cyborgs would be at base level with their abilities. They would still be what they are, but without the special abilities that come with it (i.e., enhanced abilities such as super strength, etc.). The same would go for cyborgs, as the technology would fritz out and instead run on a small current of magic.
As for characters animated/made from magic, there's enough passive magic left in the air that they can easily live/function, but they won't have any of their special abilities.
Note: Supernatural characters such as wereanimals, vampires, etc. will still be these things. That does not change about them, therefore they can still be forced to shift at the full moon, be burned by sunlight (if that's part of their mythology), as that's part of them. They just do not have the extra abilities unless they make a deal.
ღ Okay, so what about weapons?
Your character will have any and all items they would have had on them from the moment you pull them from! However, if your weapons/items had magical properties, the magical properties are now gone.
As for weapons such as guns, they will continue to work until ammo runs out. At that point, they will be out of luck.
Technology will follow the same course as magic; it will stop working upon arrival in the game.
Summons and Pokemon are still on your character, however they are limited to three. Containers such as pokeballs no longer function, and the summons/pokemon have lost their abilities for now.
ღ Is there a way to get my character's powers back?
Excellent question! Yes, this will definitely happen, but it all depends on you.
ღ How?
See, Fox happens to like making deals. If your character makes a deal with him, he'll give back something. Or you can ask for something else entirely! You can also participate in certain events to get items for your character.
ღ Where does my character live?
There will be villages throughout the land that your character could potentially take up residence within, once they are available to your character. Astor will be the first and primary village.
ღ Can they get a job?
How else are you going to pay for things? I hope you're not planning on becoming a thief.
Characters can get jobs at the village once it opens up to them, as well as residences. There will also be quests and the like for characters to go on that will result in getting paid.
ღ So, do my characters' actions have consequences?
Yes. And so does their inaction. Beastly Roses operates under the idea that players can help change their setting, whether for good or ill. A large portion of that comes from responses in the State of the Village post. Other than that, the mods take stock of actions taken during events, player plots, and the like. This game is for you as much as it is for us.
ღ If this is a fairy tale game, are there fairy tale events?
Yes, yes there are. We're glad you asked. We try to involve some fairy tale elements for minor and random events that occur around the village. But the big fairy tale events? Those are run by Fox.
ღ Why Fox?
Fox is a trickster spirit that thrives on chaos, and at the moment, he is the only character that still has magic that is more than willing to use it. And his favorite things to mess with are the Heroes from the coffins. Whether it's for his amusement or to assert his control over them, a fairy tale event will come now and then.
ღ What happens during those events?
Fox will force a character to take a particular role in his "game" that corresponds with the fairy tale. You could be the Swan Princess waiting for Siegfried to reject you, or you could be the hunter seduced by a fair maiden into not shooting her brother. Either way, he will expect you to play your roles and accept the consequences of your actions.
ღ Are Games the only events?
Not at all! There will be game plot events as well, to further the overarching plot. Fox's Games are there to explore character development, figure out more about this world and their place in it, and ultimately heal - or destroy - Loria. Other events are about the world around them that may or may not be related to related to or caused by the characters, but will still affect them.
